Looking for a job in Sweden? Here’s the right place.

English or Swedish?

Most ads are in Swedish, but some are in English, especially for positions that require English speaking personnel. If you want to search in Swedish but don’t know the names for a profession or similar, you can use Google Translate to figure it out.

There, you can also get decent translations of ads, but not perfect. Far from perfect.

How to apply?

It varies from company to company. How to apply is always (or should be) explained in the end of an ad. Most likely it is via e-mail or to apply through a form on their website. One difference in Sweden compared to some other countries, is that it is not common to talk about money (the salary) already in the application unless that is specifically asked for. In Sweden, we consider that to be either set by general agreements on the market or something to be negotiated later (when the employer is interested).

Are there any jobs?

Sure. The amount of advertised jobs are currently approx. 60 000. Most jobs are in the Stockholm area, but there are also larger cities such as Göteborg, Malmö, Linköping, Örebro and others with quite good opportunities. Most people (two out of nine million) live in the the capitol area  and yet another 500 000 in Gothenburg and 300 000 in Malmö So it is a good rule that the jobs are there as well. Some jobs are also situated in certain regions.

Bright future

Sweden currently (September 2011) have 4 600 000 people in the workforce. 7,4 percent are unemployed (July 2011). In the next ten years, a lot of people will leave the job market for retirement. It is the large group born during the 1940:s. This will create a deficit of labor with at least 100 000 since younger generations are smaller and not able to fill the needs.

Already during 2010 the number of persons leaving for retirement, was for the first time be more then young people entering the labor market.

New possibilities

Two years ago, the Swedish government decided to improve the possibilities for work related immigration. The new rules make Sweden one of the most open countries in the world for work related immigration.
